Brad McMahan and I were boaters for the annual Kids Unlimited fishing tournament at Fayette County last Saturday. For those who do not know, KU is an organization that helps children that have cancer have experiences in fun outings in an atmosphere of friends and family where their illness can be forgotten.
These children are paired with an "angler" in a team-tournament (paper) atmosphere. Kelly & I have got to know a lot of these kids and their families personally. Brad's partner, Kelly, was actually my partner on my first KU tourny, and we have become close with her family. My partner this year, Zachary, is a leukemia patient. He is also a local celebrity as he is on the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Centers Commit for Life commercials.
Mike Lott and the Bass Cat guys have a hugh presence at this event. There were a ton of donations. Apparently the Cen-Tex bassmasters disbanded, and one of the original founders got back into the club to amend the bylaws to state that their club funds would be donated to KU; that donation was over $2600.
Even if I would have made Top 40, I think I would have rather attended this event. The kids and their families are amazing, and it humbles you to try and appreciate the gift of life, even in adversity. Leaving with a dry eye was difficult.
Way cool Derek and Brad. That's what fishing is all about. Here's hoping Zachary and Kelly are fully cured and enjoy a lives that include the joy of fishing that you two had a part in developing.
I need to give Derek all the credit here for getting us involved with KU. This will always be first priority with me also. This is our second year of doing this event and i am very proud to be involved with it. I bring my youngest daughter, Kindall with me to this event every year and it helps her understand why we all dont take things for granted. We also saw the parents of the child we had last year, they came right up to us to say Hi, and thanked us again for coming this year. That was pretty cool. Great way to meet people and make some new friends.
A little story about our day.We had Kelly as our partner this year. She was not real comfortable casting so Kindall would cast out for her and hand her the pole to reel in to hopefully catch a fish. Kelly didnt actually get to catch any fish this year, but when i would hook a fish i would call her to come reel it in. I think she really enjoy doing that. We only caught 5 fish for the day, but had a good time catching them. Fishing was real slow for most of the teams. We will be back again next year.
