Guadalupe Chain of Lakes to be De-Watered

Received this link today. Seems that the State is going to remove the water from the chain of lakes (I'm counting 9 in total) along the Guadaloupe River basin. Property owners along the chain are gearing up for lawsuits, with several suits already in action. One lake (McQueenie) near Seguin, has a suit where the property owners are trying to buy the rights from the state to create and maintain their own private lake. It's a real mess.

After the failure of the Lake Dunlap Dam earlier this year the GBRA has drawn all kinds of criticism. The dam failure brought to light how bad of shape these dams are in- I think I read that Dunlap dam was built over 90 yrs ago. Hopefully this draw down is temporary and dams are rebuilt to be stronger than ever. No telling how long construction might take and how long it might take to re-fill the reservoirs - though I bet it's going to be YEARS before the lakes are operational again. I sympathies with the homeowners, but something has to be done, nothing lasts forever, and unless they want an uncontrolled release (aka dam failure and the potential loss of life and property down stream) I kind of think this is the only option.

On the plus side, if they drain McQueenie I bet the homeowners aren't so gung ho about buying their own private mud pit.

Infrastructure failures like this aren't uncommon and they are bound to get worse. It's sad, but politics have to get involved in the fixes on these projects. ACOE dams are a federal issue, and when congress says no, we suffer.

Contact your Congress(wo)man on these issues & push on them. They receive $174,000/yr + bene's, so they may as well work for it....
