Spider Block Work Day

I gained interest from my prof in one of my ag classes when I told him about our work day coming up Sept. 17.  He asked that I send him an email with the details so he can forward to all the people in the ag program at Sam Houston to come lend a helping hand.  He mentioned extra credit for those students who want to be involved.  Here is the copy of the email I sent to Dr. Ullrich....

Dr. Ullrich,

9/17/11

The Seven Coves Bass Club, TEXAS B.A.S.S. Federation Nation affiliated clubs, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the San Jacinto River Authority are calling out to anyone who wants to come out and help manufacture artificial spider blocks to be dropped in Lake Conroe to help cope for the lack of native aquatic vegetation. Our goal is to assemble as many spider blocks as possible (materials for 1500 blocks) using cinder blocks, round pvc tubing, bamboo, and mortar. We have assembled spider blocks in the past using just pvc tubing, but this time we have bamboo to add to the flavor, as studies have shown that incorporating bamboo has an increased likeliness that bass and other species will tend to be more attracted to these artificial brush piles.
Directions: (from Huntsville)
Take I 45 S to Conroe. Take exit 89 (Teas Nursery/FM 3083). Turn right at the feeder rd light onto 3083 and proceed straight to SH 105. Turn right onto SH 105 and go a couple miles until you cross over the San Jacinto River bridge. After the bridge will be a gun range called Shooter's Station on the right. Turn right onto Damsite Rd by Shooter's Station and proceed straight through the SJRA gate. Someone will be at the gate to make sure entrance is granted. The project site is behind the Lake Conroe Dam off SH 105. If you see the dam on the right on 105 you have gone too far.

We will have all the materials/tools needed for the building of the spider blocks. The only thing we lack is manpower. For those interested, you may want to bring work gloves for the handling of the cinder blocks. Also, you may want to bring something to drink and snack on. We will be starting at approximately 8:00 am on Sat. Sept. 17 and will work until we have built a sufficient amount. The more the merrier. Anyone who wants to come be a part of an amazing conservation experience or who just wants to come learn more about the efforts the Seven Coves Bass Club has done in partnership with TPWD and SJRA or to see our aquatic plants nursery on site is more than welcome to come out. We will be allowing entrance to the site until around 10 am so if you can't make it by 8 and still want to come be a part of this please Do Come. The more people that help, the faster we can accomplish our goals.

Please rsvp to Jason Gunter at 936-524-4429 or jcg020@shsu.edu or for any questions reguarding this work day.

A Great Big Thanks from everyone in the SCBC to anyone who comes out to lend a hand for a good cause!
