Saturday was a good day for Lake Conroe. 93 anglers from all walks of life participated in our Grass Carp Tournament. The size of the field made it possible for prize payouts to be respectable. Hourly "Big Fish", and "Most Fish" winners spanned from 14 to 65 years of age...and were rewarded with $125 and $140 paychecks. Keith Caka earned the tournament win with 28 carp brought to the scales for the entire day. His hard work also earned him $950 for his efforts.
All participants involved expressed how they had a great time at the event. Some understood the philosophy behind the event and were out there to help...but most were excited to be a part of a "fish" tournament for their very first time. There were a lot of "amped up" fishing folks who brought grass carp to the scales all throughout the day. We weren't quite sure what to expect as we sent both novice, and accomplished anglers out on Conroe to do battle with the carp on "rod and reel". Similar harvesting tournaments in other lakes in the past (both R & R and Bow), had yielded very low success results. But our folks were able to bring in nearly 300 mature grass carp for a total weight of close to 3,000 pounds. This was over 1 & 1/2 TONS of fish removed from the lake !!!
A big thanks goes out to all of our clubbies who were at the event to help. SCBC members were there assisting anglers with transporting fish from the docks to the scales, and supporting the tournament wherever needed. Kudos to Ron K. for keeping accurate records on his laptop throughout the day...and to J. Miller for (once again) doing a great job as "emcee".
The Texas Bow Anglers followed the rod and reel tournament with a shooting tournament of their own. Will post their results here as I receive them.
Was a good day for the SCBC aquatic plant restoration program as we received nearly $500 of program funding from the tournament.
This event was a blast and a great success! All of our "advertising" was done by word of mouth, hand flyers, and internet postings; I can't imagine how many we would have had if we had advertised it more. We have already had several inquiries as to when the next one will be (pray). Awesome job to all!!!
So looking at it like this....a grass carp must eat 1.5 times thier weight to sustain life....you guys just saved 7500 lbs of veg each day until the others get fat enough to eat that amount. The question is.....where and what are they eating??

According to people that have caught some while catfishing with shad and cut their stomachs open they are dining on shad. Wonder if anyone cut any of the ones open from the tournament?

I'm sure what you mean is they accidentally foul hooked them which ripped their stomachs open and the innards fell out.
